Sunderland Morocco Operation Smile at OneTrueMedia.com

Report about the Mission of Taroudant

Report written by Nour Mahmoudi

As one of the 4th missions that Operation Smile Morocco does in a year, some of the students of Sunderland University participated as active volunteers. We were split into different stations where they needed non-medical staff such as Medical records, Electronic Medical Records (EMR), and Patient image technician (PIT)...

On this mission 3 students (Kareema Alaoui Cherifi, Ghita Taoumi and Imane Aabid) has been trained for the post of Medical Records by Nour Mahmoudi, so that they could handle all the jobs of this important station where they were responsible of every single chart.
Jihane el bejaj was the PIT in this mission: she took pictures of all the patients before, during, and after the surgery, and Chouaib Jawadi was the EMR.

In this mission we screened 215 patients on one day, 107 child and adult were operated, and 139 Procedure was done in a period of 5 days of surgery.

Be part of the change in the life of people, give them the opportunity to have a normal life, and create a new smile on their faces are the main objective of Operation Smile Morocco which make the Student of Sunderland University participate and have the possibility to see how an operation of 45 min can be done and change the life of someone reached by a clef- lip or a clef palate.

The Next mission will take place in Marrakesh in October

Women in Higher Education Elite Leaders

Bouchra Kachoub a teacher at Sunderland Morocco attended the second meeting of Wheel in Sousse, Tunisia, July 11th and 12th , representing Sunderland Morocco as partners with TEMPUS (Trans-European Mobility Program for University Studies) and UWIC (University of Wales, Institute Cardiff)

What is WHEEL ?
Women in Higher Education Elite Leaders (WHEEL) is a regional women’s network established during a meeting of the TEMPUS (Trans-European Mobility Program for University Studies) program at Al Fayyoum University in Egypt on January 2011. The network seeks to advance, support, develop and connect women leaders in higher education across MEDA region. The network aspires to be a ‘steering wheel’ that guides the process of women’s empowerment in higher education.

Who are we ?
A network of university leaders, potential leaders or women committed to the values of social equity. Our network includes deans, vice-deans, managers, executives and academics from the European Union and partner states in east Europe and North Africa. Members of the club are committed to advancing the role of institutions of higher education in promoting social balance as a principal conduit of social change.
Through joint partnership, cooperation and collective effort WHEEL members seek to raise awareness about and improve perceptions of female leadership in higher education.
Strongly adhering to the TEMPUS program leading philosophy, the members include women from different nationalities, different geographical, cultural, educational backgrounds firmly advocating the values of diversity, mutual understanding and capitalization of experience and knowhow in order to secureequal opportunity for all.

How do we work ?
WHEEL’s membership is open to any academia member – without any distinctions as to gender, origin, field of interest, position… - sharing our values and concerns.
It is, however, now restricted to the 19 core members from the different partner universities from the MEDA region. WHEEL is run by a Board of 14 members, consisting of one member from each partner university, and a Steering Committee made of 6 co-opted members, five from theMEDA partner countries and one representing the European countries. The MEDA countries are: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Malta, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey.

What are our objectives ?
Despite the fact that women have proved their ability to lead in various educational, scientific, political and economic fields, very often women shy away from leadership positions because of certain continuing misperception of women taking leadership roles.
Our main objective, as already stated, is the promotion of female leadership in academia by establishing in people’s minds (and especially females’) that work and leading positions in higher education institutions are achievablefor all, male and female. Our actions will, therefore, embrace all activities likely to promote the aspiration of women leaders in higher education. But there will be a particular focus on activities of raising educational awareness
